  Given a big list of products with their characteristics, the algorithm should calculate the minimum clusters, grouping the product when possible and minimizing the cost of such clusters. Obviously, despite of the size of the problem, the algorithm should be able to find a solution in a sensible period of time. Each product will have a set of characteristics and it will be possible to merge it with other if both are compatible meeting a set of constraints. For each couple of products is necessary to analyze if they are compatible respecting the compatibility rules for each of their parameters and the cost of the merger. Every time two products are merged, the new one will be more restricted, so it implies to be more expensive to make (of course, the standardization will have other benefits, larger than the costs of the merger and out of the scope of the problem). The input of the algorithm would be: product 1, product 2, product 3, product 4… and the output: cluster1 (product1, product2, product3 with cost X) cluster 2 (product 4 with cost Y).

  Our client requires aluminium and tin plate food and beverage cans to be conveyed / transported during production without damage. Products are small (cylinder with a diameter 40mm-70mm and a height up to 200mm), thin (wall thickness of ~ 100microns), light-weight (<10g) and tend to be ‘bottom-heavy’ as there is a base, but no lid yet. The cans are moved around the production plant to enable forming, trimming, washing, internal coating, external decoration and lacquering and then eventually palletised for onward to delivery to the beverage manufacturer for filling. A can will travel through approximately 1km of conveying equipment, using a combination of systems – gravity-fed feeders, magnetic-, vacuum- and air- based conveyors.
  As the drive towards sustainability and competitiveness increases, can manufacturers are striving to take weight and cost out of their products - this inevitably leads to thinner cans, which are consequently less robust during the manufacture and filling processes. Combined with increasing production line speeds (machines process up to 2000 cans per minute), existing can handling solutions can be too aggressive, resulting in damage (primarily denting) to the wall, shoulder and base radius of each can.
  
  Damage can occur throughout the manufacturing process including the filling, and palletising and de-palletising steps. Key problem areas are where cans are required to accumulate, change direction or stop, in mass or in single file. Examples include: transition from “mass to single file”; can stops before a single stream process (external decoration or filling); storage areas and the interaction with directional guiding systems, gates and rails.
  
  Solutions could include:-
  
  - Management of transition from “en masse” to “single file” presentation of components
  - Energy management using magnetic, eddy current and linear drive technologies
  - Durable energy/shock absorbing materials – need to withstand 24/7 use and continuous product contact
  - Improved magnetic and air movement technology
  - Use of low friction materials for conveyor components to reduce energy (input and subsequent kinetic energy). Also combined use with high friction materials to provide ‘braking’ areas
  - Alternative materials for conveyor line manufacture – e.g. ceramics, carbon fibre, to enable easier manufacture and assembly of the plant
  - ‘Soft stop’ and buffering technology to slow down and contain products without damage
  - Improved guide rail materials – flexible but rigid (replace existing aluminium / UHMWPE combination)
  - Kinetic energy harvesting for high-speed manufacturing
  - Modelling and simulation software to understand interaction of product and process and optimise product movement
  - Production line control system – managing interaction between machines and conveyor systems and subsequent product flow
  
  We believe the solution, or elements of a solution, currently exist within other materials handling capabilities i.e. outside the can handling fraternity. These could, for example, be found in manufacturing industries such as:- Glassware (laboratory or lighting); Semiconductor; Pharmaceutical; Cigarette and Food.   Current wireless power technology is centred on providing solutions for small devices or those in close proximity - e.g. placing a mobile phone on a charging pad, charging of tooth brushes etc. However, this either relies on collaboration with the manufacturers of the target devices (e.g. batteries) or is restricted to low power short range transfer.
  
  Our client is interested in continuously powering every-day devices (such as PCs, TVs, etc.), simultaneously and within a room environment. Enabling technology will allow them to provide products that could replace electrical infrastructure (such as wiring, sockets, trunking, etc.) for offices, temporary meeting spaces and the home environment.   Heads Up Display (HUD) technology projects a virtual image on to a car's windshield or windscreen, giving the driver real-time information on driving speed and other data. The key components of the HUD system include an optical engine to generate the image, a projection screen, lenses and an aperture opening in the dashboard. The combined effect of the optical system is to create an image "past" the windscreen so it appears someway in front of the vehicle. Currently this Virtual Image Distance is approximately 2 meters.
  
  Future trends indicate that augmented reality (AR) will be a standard component of HUD technology. AR could typically include real time driving directions, improved vision in poor driving conditions, more effective warning signals of obstacles. For maximum driver comfort and for AR to be effective, the Virtual Image Distance should be greater than 10 meters.
  
  Given the VID challenge, the image additionally should not be small. A Field of View meeting or exceeding 15 degrees x 7.5 degrees is sought.
  
  In order to generate the desired image, a large optical pathway is necessary which makes the existing equipment bulky. Increasing the VID requires an increase in the optical pathway of the generated image, which increases the size of the total HUD system beneath an already crowded dashboard. The volume of the HUD components beneath the dashboard is called the construction space. If a total system is being proposed, it should fit within a construction space of 7 liters.
  
  The company is also interested in receiving information on components which can make the traditional HUD system smaller.

  Waste (Dust) constitutes a serious disposal problem for steel companies and it is of extreme interest to be able to address the costs of handling. Some companies do exist that can recover zinc, iron, lead, calcium and other minerals from the dust; however the remaining residual material must still be land filled in secure dump sites. The cost to transport and landfill due to its toxic nature is high. Furthermore, future legislation is expected to be more and more stringent, and may pose significant problems for steel producers.
  
  Constraints:
  
  Needs to be Cost Effective solution when compared to landfill - currently approx E60 per ton
  
  Desired Outcome
  Ability to treat dust cheaply so it becomes less reactive and non-toxic (removal of heavy metals). It would then cost less to landfill as it won't be classed as toxic waste, and it could be reused with slag or other application.

  The conditions that produce coughs, and that produces the stuffy nose, scratchy throat, and watery eyes of colds and allergies (along with a host of other symptoms) have multiple origins, but the symptoms themselves are remarkably similar. Many of these symptoms are caused by histamine reactions. Histamine triggers an inflammatory response in tissues and increases capillary permeability so that white blood cells can more easily reach invading pathogens (incidentally causing runny nose and watery eyes).   Pain is often the symptom of medical conditions associated with tissue damage or the potential for tissue damage. Nociceptors in the peripheral nervous system convey the sensation of pain to the brain and can increase the body's overall stress response even during times when consciousness is ablated by anesthesia. Pain usually resolves when the painful stimulus is removed - when inflammation is reduced or when wound healing has taken place; but sometimes chronic pain continues, perhaps due to damage in the central nervous system. In all cases, pain reduction also reduces the body's stress level, promotes healing, and reduces the body's susceptibility to other medical conditions.
  
  This organization is interested in relieving a wide variety of pain by using a device, and your successful solution to this need may treat more than one form of pain.   We are using some algorithms for voice activity detection based on signal energy. We need more advanced algorithms. Our signal data is obtained from Personal Computer's microphones at 16KHz (but could be obtained at other frequencies in future). We need it to be not hardware dependant (for being implemented over Windows, Macintosh (PowerPC and X86) and Linux. It should be coded in C or C++ and be exportable to a Visual Studio project. We need the algorithm to be light weight: less than 200KB once compiled. It should improve the performance of free publicly available algorithms for that purpose.

  We need a hardware with the same characteristics as linksys (see added information) or to fit the configuration that we have but in an integrated manner in order to give a better image of the product that we are offering.
  
  The objective of the challenge is to assemble all the compounds in one, taking into account consume of electricity. Furthermore, the Network Storage link of Linksys has an internal memory of 8 Mb, it would be convenient to amplify to 1 Gb and eliminate the flash drive memory of Kingston.
  
  To give an integrated solution, unifying the compounds and designing a case, minimum of 2 USB external connexions in order to connect a modem or/ and a USB battery. 3 USB Bluetooth connexions should be possible to attach.
  
  If the solution is not based in linksys, we have to assure that the new device works without problem under Linux Debian 4.0.
  
  Background: We currently have 2 models full configured for us based in the microprocessors gumstick and in the current linksys and running with linux ( gumstix) and l linux debian etch. All the compounds work correctly, but since they are not assembled in a physical way they provoke confusion and they don’t give the feeling of a 100% ended product.
  
  Success criteria: we want to achieve an integrated hardware, whether keeping linksys as base or similar to the conventional and when the cost per unit is less than 100 Euros with accessories (electricity adaptor, hub USB, Bluetooth sticks...). For this, is necessary that the device has the relevant certificates in the case that uses integrated chipsets Bluetooth that meet with European community.
