  Depending on the nature of the active system can be classified into two groups= Independent systems (sachets, strips or labels) and systems integrated in the package. Active strips or labels are independent systems constituting an element which is incorporated or adhered to the inside of the container. They are manufactured permeable on one side, through which is transferred or released mass by the systems packaging.
  
  Europeans throw annually 89 millons tons of edible food, denounced an European parliament report. Expiration dates are one of the main reasons. The latest trends in packaging is to improve shelf-life of foodstuff by addition of natural additives into the pack in order to decrease spoliage of food.
  
  Active packaging are materials and articles intended to extend shelf-life or to maintain or improve the condition of the food packaged, and which are deliberately designed to incorporate transmitting components to food substances or packaged environment, or absorb these substances
  from the environment surrounding the food.
  
  The active component may be part of the packaging material by an insert or attachment to the inside of the pack (label) or by new active materials developed through conventional transformation processes (coating, co/extrusion, lamination, ...).   Regarding the existing state of the technique, the electrochemical processes have characteristics which make them very adequate to be applied for the synthesis of organic compounds with industrial application. Here, oxidation processes occurs upon electrodes named anodes where the substance which must be oxidized loses its electrons on the anode without needing conventional oxidising agents. Therefore, contaminants derived from the use of conventional oxidising agents are not generated and hence, no need for the management of hazardous residues is applicable.
  
  On the other hand, the electrochemical processes are developed under soft conditions (atmospheric pressure and room temperature) and clearly facilitate further processes of separation of one of the compounds of the reaction mixture.

  A method of determining cell viability using gravitational field flow fractionation, cytometry flow, and the centrifuge field flow fractionation, which fractionation technical used a setup that comprises two plates forming between them a channel of FFF, one of them is a depletion wall and the other is an accumulation wall, characterized in that the method use the gravitational field flow fractionation with fluorescence detection, comprising the steps of:

  New procedure for sewage sludge composting. Our partner has several years experience in composting technology and it has more useful and environmentally friendly composting technology.
  
  The offered composting technology is suitable for composting sewage sludge. It is based on the application of controlled composting for rapid degradation of organic pollutants and immobilization of inorganic micro-pollutants for safe land disposal by using industrial slurry-phase by-products (e.g. by-products from sunflower seed oil processing industry). The process of controlled composting contributes to preserve the fertilizer value.
  
  Before the composting the untreated sewage sludge is mixed with waste sludge (e.g. sludge produced by sunflower seed oil processing industry) and other specific additives to accelerate mineralization and to moderate ammonia and GHG (greenhouse Gas) emission.
  In some cases composting simulation is used for optimalization of raw material composition and gas emission controlling within 3 weeks in an adiabatic drum system.
  Composting occurs under controlled condition means that additives, digesters and labile carbon sources are added continuously to the compost pile. Specific additives are responsible for the suitable and rapid mineralization and thermophilic stage to preserve fertilizer value.
  
  Depending on the properties of raw materials encapsulated windrow composting is applied for controlled composting which means a covering of compost pile by using specific polymers.
  The end-product is a potential source for soil improvement and conditioning after 4-pre- and 6-week-term post maturation stages.
  
  The whole composting process is not longer than 70-90 days.

  • During the pre-storage of raw sewage sludge the GHG (Greenhouse Effect) emission and f. coliform and streptococcus number is reduced significantly within 24-48 hours.

  The newly developed technology is based on the complex utilisation of following raw materials:
  
   livestock wastes, TSE free animal organs, manure, semi-liquid manure, food-processing industrial wastes, canning industrial wastes, diary industrial wastes, technological sewage sludge
   meat meal, solid phase or semi-liquid phase biogas residues, animal meat, animal hair, animal skin, eggs, diary products, feathers
  
  The aim of the technology is to provide a composted end-product, which can be potentially used for soil-improvement and conditioning with high total organic matter, total N, total P, total K content.
  
  The technology procedure includes 3 phases,
  
  1. Pre-treatment:
  Pre-storage of meat industrial wastes cause significant odor emission: S-compound, ammonia, phenolic compounds, volatile fatty acids (C2-C7). It can be easily minimized by using essential plant oils with application of conventional additives. Our partner’s full-scale experiment demonstrated that utilization of additives caused significant inhibition effect on pathogen survival in 48 hours.
  
  2. Two-stage thermal treatment:
  During the treatment the company applies a two-stage method by using non thermophilic phase before the second thermal stage at temperatures below 60 oC. After the second thermal stage plant derived oils are used for deodoration and conservation of short-chain organic and fatty acids.
  
  3. Composting:
  Depending on the physical-chemical characteristics the composting procedure is planned by using adiabatic bioreactor.

  Our partner, a Hungarian SME has developed a new procedure for moderation of environmental pollution produced by municipal solid waste landfills. The aim of our partner is to reduce environmental risks of municipal solid waste landfills.
  
  The offered technology is based on the partial treatment of municipal solid waste landfills which is independent of the amount of waste mass. The partial treatment can be described as an organic municipal waste aerobic stabilization and composting by use microbial inocula for optimal mineralization without application of inorganic or hazardous additives. The stabilized municipal organic waste layer is functioned as a buffering layer for reduction of environmental risk. The whole composting process is not longer than 70-90 days.
  
  The technology is based on the aerobic stabilization of mixed municipal solid waste which consist kitchen waste, green waste and inert waste in smaller amount. The controlled aerobic waste stabilization occurs in open windrow or encapsulated system by utilizing fresh or older municipal solid waste in 5-9 weeks which minimizes the environmental risk.
  The stabilized municipal organic waste is placed on the untreated waste surface as a soil covering with high buffer capacity. The treated stabilized organic municipal and untreated layers are changed continuously in form of 0,20-0,60 m deep layer.
  
  As a result of the 2-year full-scale experiments 30-60 % volume loss was measured by use inoculation. The volume loss depended on the physical-chemical and biological characteristic of the untreated organic waste.
  
  With the offered technology the environmental pollution of municipal solid waste landfills and dumps decreases.

  • Utilization of environmentally friendly additives or masking agents reduces odor emission, odor intensity significantly before the composting procedure.

Novel method to increase production and extraction of phytosterols

  New procedure that increases the production and extraction of phytosterols in plant cell cultures in vitro. To do this, is added to the culture medium cyclodextrins and optionally methyl jasmonate. After growing under certain conditions, phytosterols are obtained with yields higher than the current extraction techniques from the plant material. This method allows a stable production of phytosterols, independent of geographical, seasonal and environmental factors, with reduced spaces requirements and easier process of purification and industrial scaling.

  The research group "Proteomics and functional genomics of plants of the University of Alicante has developed a new procedure that increases the production and extraction of phytosterols in plant cell cultures in vitro. To do this, is added to the culture medium cyclodextrins and optionally methyl jasmonate. After growing under certain conditions, phytosterols are obtained with yields higher than the current extraction techniques from the plant material. This method allows a stable production of phytosterols, independent of geographical, seasonal and environmental factors, with reduced spaces requirements and easier process of purification and industrial scaling. The group is looking for companies interested in acquiring the technology for commercial exploitation.

  Because of the beneficial properties described above, phytosterols are widely used in different sectors:

  Innovative aspects
  
  Nowadays, the classical method of extracting phytosterols from vegetable raw materials has a very low yield. This, combined with the large amount of plant material needed to extract a significant amount of phytosterols from global natural sources (only could be supplied 10% of Western populations), causes a high cost of these products.
  With this new process of in vitro plant cell culture, it is possible to increase production and efficiency of extraction of phytosterols from natural resources for a greater percentage of the population that could benefit from the positive effects of phytosterols on health.
  
  Main advantages of the technology
  
  • The in vitro plant cell cultures are independent of: geographical, seasonal and environmental factors.
  • They are stable production systems (ensure continuous collection of compounds with constant quality and productivity).
  • Reduced space requirements for the development of production.
  • Easier process of purifying the compound of interest (it can be optimized and adjusted to the parameters of cell growth to facilitate their release into the culture medium).
  • Possibility to produce phytosterols on a large scale in bioreactors easier and cheaper, so it is possible to reach costing levels that permits marketing the technology.
  • Possibility of obtaining new products that are not synthesized by plants in natural state.

  Our partner, a Hungarian SME, has developed a new procedure for complex utilization of industrial sludge from sunflower or rapeseed oil production. The offered technology is used for creating compost products for plant nutrition or animal feeding or bedding products in cattle feedlots from sunflower or rapeseed oil industrial sludge. The offered technology can be used by edible oil factories. It ensures complex agricultural use of industrial oily sludge.
  
  The offered technology is based on the complex utilization of by-products from industrial sludge: floated, winter sludge, oily mucilage as compost for plant nutrition or animal feeding, bedding in cattle feedlots depending on the physicochemical and microbiological characteristics.
  These wastes contain oil in amounts of 35 to 40 % of total mass; the vegetable fats can be easily degraded through physicochemical or biological treatment, which results in short-chain fatty acid production. The sunflower seed oil contains linoleic acid (45 to 60 %), oleic acid (30 to 35 %). The whole composting process is not longer than 70 to 90 days.
  
  Innovative considerations:
  
  - The technology serves complex agricultural use of industrial oily sludge.
  - The application of newly developed feed additive increases weight gain and feed conversation rate, and reduces the fattening period.
  - The use of oily feed additives reduces total N loss during the storage of feedlot manure causing ammonia emission.
  - The stabilised industrial secondary raw materials can be utilised as a bedding material with pelleted paper wastes, non- hazardous composts.
  - The composted oily waste has high agronomic value; the technology results in a potential use for soil manuring and soil improvement
  
  Full scale-experimental results:
  
  Composting of sewage sludge with plant oil industrial sludge:
  
  Sewage sludge – vegetable oil industrial sludge mixed compost piles showed significantly higher total N and DRP and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria number in the end-product than the untreated control group (it means a mixing of sewage sludge with wheat straw). Via lime stabilization the industrial waste based compost is suitable for soil improvement in case of acidic sand texture soils. The composting method results significantly lower trace gas emission and viable weed seed content than the untreated control group. The compost product is a potential source for soil improvement and plant nutrition.
  
  Feed additive:
  
  - The experimental dosage of oily industrial residues did not cause digestive disorder.
  - In case of pig feeding the experimental supplemented oily slurry showed significantly higher daily weight gain than the control group.
  - The fattening period is reduced by 25 to 30 days for oily sludge additive feeding.
  - The oily sludge feeding groups showed significantly higher feed conversion than the control group.

  The offered technology is used for creating compost products for plant nutrition or animal feeding or bedding products in cattle feedlots, and can be used by edible oil factories.

  Background information:
  
  A few decades ago the parasital illnesses of the internal organs and the bowel system used to be exceptions. Nowadays the formation of more and more sicknesses can be related to the spreading of parasites. Despite of this there is still not enough effort taken to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infections and diseases caused by parasites. For easier comprehension it can be stated that basically there are 2 groups of parasites: micro parasites (viruses, viroids, prions, infestant bacteria, fungi and protists) and macro parasites (worms, mites and insects). Parasites live most of their lifespan in the host body from which they are feeding and reducing its chances of survival and reproduction (virulence).
  
  Why are parasites particularly dangerous to humans?
  The human body is a super intelligent biological instrument which through its immune system can defend itself against intruders. However in case our natural and acquired immunity does not work well our body could become an ideal host for the parasites. The one-sided or deficient nutrition, the feed-additives, environmental pollution (E.g. decrease of drinking water quality) and application of antibiotics and steroids all weaken the immune system. The typical western diet is particularly favourable for the parasites: diet rich in fats, starch and sugar creates an ideal basis for their stay. The human body in case of appropriate nutrition does not provide shelter for any kind of adaptive and/or causative parasites. When sufficient amount of gastric juice, healthy bile, and bacteria creating the healthy microflora of small gut are present – these members of our natural defensive system are enough for maintaining the healthy function of our body. In this case parasites cannot prey upon us moreover their mere survival is impossible. Thus such environment should be provided which makes the survival of the parasites impossible.
