  Conversion of sunlight energy into storable chemical energy is the major pillar of a hydrogen economy based on non fossil fuels. Hydrogen (or other fuels) photoproduction must be coupled with the oxidation of water to oxygen. Recombination of fuels with oxygen would then provide the chemically stored energy for its use as required. Solar fuels are a promising alternative to other energy storage methods as batteries, since fuels are easier to transport and store in terms of handling and long term durability. The water oxidation process needs a proper catalyst to be feasible at large scale. This is one of the most important challenges that needs to be solved within this field.
  
  Being totally inorganic, the offered polyoxometallate catalyst does not decompose in the highly oxidative conditions of water splitting. The catalyst advantageously operates in a wide range of pHs and in the presence of an oxidant (either chemical, electrochemical, or photochemically generated). The catalyst allows for high turnover numbers, fast catalytic cycles and is self-repairing, which means that it does not show signs of fatigue or degradation upon time. Leer más

  Un pigmento híbrido es una mezcla controlada entre material orgánico e inorgánico. Como material inorgánico podría ser utilizado varios tipos de arcillas por sus propiedades nanoscópicas y, como material orgánico, colorantes naturales o sintéticos (thermochrome, eletrochrome, luminiscencia, etc.)
  
  El grupo de investigación ha desarrollado un nuevo método para producir pigmentos híbridos nanoestructurados con propiedades ópticas y coloidales específicas de acuerdo a los parámetros de producción. Principalmente, la customizaton del comportamiento de estos materiales se consigue mediante el control del ratio material orgánico / inorgánico.

  This method has two stages:
  
  1) Dispersion of, at least, an inorganic material in water.
  2) Addition of, at least, an organic coloring solubilized by agitation.
  
  The following parameters might be changed in order to obtain different kinds of nanopigments:
  
  • Inorganic material concentration.
  • Organic coloring concentration.
  • pH.
  • Temperature.
  • Ionic strength.
  
  The optical response of nanopigments changes as a function of the particle size of the inorganic material (or materials) used by the diffusion.
  
  This method makes it possible to produce new hybrid nanopigments with optical and colloidal properties for tailored applications. Mainly, the customizaton of the behaviour of this materials is achieved by controlling organic/inorganic ratio in the material.
  
  The morphology of the material is hybrid (laminar/fibrillar). The organic coloring is selected among different types: azoic complexes, metallic, sulphurose, iminoquinone, antraquinone, ftalocianine, etc. In general words, they can be both natural or synthetic.
  
  Products can be used in printing inks, painting and dyes, paper, synthetic or natural fibers, polymer materials, cosmetics, etc.
  
  With this method the following features can be achieved:
  
  Color range control: Through the control over the different spectral species, the optical response is modified too, so the color range can be enlarged.
  
  Increase in the colouring power: The ability of the material for increasing the absorption on the surface is linked to three parameters. First, absorption coefficient of the nanopigment in relation to the coloring solution coefficient. Second, light dispersion caused by nanoparticles and addtiional coverage of the surface to fill. Third, reology and fisico-chemical properties of the material are able to obtain homogeneous dispersions.
  
  Environmental impact reduction: Some of the usual pigments contain heavy metals in its composition while inorganic solids used in this method are free of heavy metals and can even be used in cosmetics.   New procedure for sewage sludge composting. Our partner has several years experience in composting technology and it has more useful and environmentally friendly composting technology.
  
  The offered composting technology is suitable for composting sewage sludge. It is based on the application of controlled composting for rapid degradation of organic pollutants and immobilization of inorganic micro-pollutants for safe land disposal by using industrial slurry-phase by-products (e.g. by-products from sunflower seed oil processing industry). The process of controlled composting contributes to preserve the fertilizer value.
  
  Before the composting the untreated sewage sludge is mixed with waste sludge (e.g. sludge produced by sunflower seed oil processing industry) and other specific additives to accelerate mineralization and to moderate ammonia and GHG (greenhouse Gas) emission.
  In some cases composting simulation is used for optimalization of raw material composition and gas emission controlling within 3 weeks in an adiabatic drum system.
  Composting occurs under controlled condition means that additives, digesters and labile carbon sources are added continuously to the compost pile. Specific additives are responsible for the suitable and rapid mineralization and thermophilic stage to preserve fertilizer value.
  
  Depending on the properties of raw materials encapsulated windrow composting is applied for controlled composting which means a covering of compost pile by using specific polymers.
  The end-product is a potential source for soil improvement and conditioning after 4-pre- and 6-week-term post maturation stages.
  
  The whole composting process is not longer than 70-90 days.
  
  Innovation consideration
  
  • During the pre-storage of raw sewage sludge the GHG (Greenhouse Effect) emission and f. coliform and streptococcus number is reduced significantly within 24-48 hours.
  • Application of composting simulation occurs under controlled and closed condition contributes to the preservation of fertilizer value.
  • Utilization of specific non-hazardous additives and residuals from different industrial activities induces longer thermophilic phase.
  • Acceleration of organic micro-pollutants’ degradation and immobilization of inorganic toxic elements result safe land disposal.

  In ohmic heating electrical energy is dissipated in heat with a very high efficiency (electrodes in contact with the reaction medium), resulting in fast and uniform heating and in the increase of charged species movement. As in the case of the heating with microwave radiation, electrical energy is transformed into thermal energy. However, on contrary of heating with microwave radiation (penetration depth of microwave radiation in absorbing media is limited) the penetration depth is virtually unlimited and the extent of heating is regulated only by the spatial uniformity of electrical conductivity throughout the reaction medium and the time spent in the ohmic reactor.   Our partner, a Hungarian SME has developed a new procedure for the remediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils and organic waste. The aim of our partner is to utilise different compost-based end-products and organic secondary raw materials which are not suitable for agricultural use.
  
  Hydrocarbon contaminations are of major concern at many contaminated industrial sites throughout the world. The biodegradation of soil-bound hydrocarbon contaminations or hydrocarbon organic waste is a two-step process, which involves initial mobilization from the solid to aqueous phase, followed by subsequent microbial catabolism.
  
  The aim of the company’s research was to develop a brand new complex technology which is based on the following elements:
  1. enhancing bioavailability of organic micro-pollutants
  2. application of various organic and inorganic nutrient amendments during the aerobic phase I. and II. processes
  3. utilisation of end-products from composting and aerobic stabilization plants
  4. immobilization of organic and inorganic micro-pollutants by using composted or stabilized secondary raw materials
  
  The complex technology can be divided into three phases (Figure):
  1. pre-treatment of the contaminated soil or organic waste: enhancing bioavailability of organic micro-pollutants: by applying non-ionic surfactant
  2. rapid biodegradation of organic contaminants during aerobic phase I. and phase II. processes by using organic and inorganic amendments and microbial inocula
  3. immobilization of inorganic and organic micro-pollutants by using end-products from composting and aerobic stabilization plants
  
  Innovative considerations
  
  - enhancing bioavailability of TPH, PAH compounds before the biobed-pile treatment
  - utilization of compost and stabilized organic wastes which are not suitable for agricultural use
  - use of compost as a carrier of useful microbes for inoculation of hydrocarbon contaminated soils
  - our technology is consists of two aerobic stage for the best biodegradation of different organic micro-pollutants
  - waste-free utilization of organic residues from bioenergy plants
  - immobilization of non-biodegradable compounds using composted non hazardous organic wastes

  Our partner, a Hungarian SME has developed a new procedure for moderation of environmental pollution produced by municipal solid waste landfills. The aim of our partner is to reduce environmental risks of municipal solid waste landfills.
  
  The offered technology is based on the partial treatment of municipal solid waste landfills which is independent of the amount of waste mass. The partial treatment can be described as an organic municipal waste aerobic stabilization and composting by use microbial inocula for optimal mineralization without application of inorganic or hazardous additives. The stabilized municipal organic waste layer is functioned as a buffering layer for reduction of environmental risk. The whole composting process is not longer than 70-90 days.
  
  The technology is based on the aerobic stabilization of mixed municipal solid waste which consist kitchen waste, green waste and inert waste in smaller amount. The controlled aerobic waste stabilization occurs in open windrow or encapsulated system by utilizing fresh or older municipal solid waste in 5-9 weeks which minimizes the environmental risk.
  The stabilized municipal organic waste is placed on the untreated waste surface as a soil covering with high buffer capacity. The treated stabilized organic municipal and untreated layers are changed continuously in form of 0,20-0,60 m deep layer.
  
  As a result of the 2-year full-scale experiments 30-60 % volume loss was measured by use inoculation. The volume loss depended on the physical-chemical and biological characteristic of the untreated organic waste.
  
  With the offered technology the environmental pollution of municipal solid waste landfills and dumps decreases.
  
  Innovative considerations:
  
  • decreasing environmental pollution of municipal solid waste landfills and dumps
  • The stabilized compost layers with high adsorption capacity contribute to the immobilization of organic and inorganic micro-pollutants.

  • The technology is flexible which does not depend on the total waste mass.
  • The compost layers which are produced during the stabilization of organic municipal waste can immobilize the organic and inorganic pollutants in landfills

  The offering client is a Hungarian SME. The profile of the company: research and development in the fields of industrial waste management, environmental protection, electrochemistry, chemistry.
  
  Waste waters that contain dissolved organic materials are produced in enormous quantities worldwide. Industrial waste waters that contain toxic organic components cannot be purified using conventional biological water treatment technologies. The toxic organic compounds are to be removed first using expensive separation technologies. The separated, toxic organic materials are usually incinerated in the end, resulting in a very expensive and complex water treatment technology.
  
  The offer of our client provides a new water cleaning technology called “underwater plasma technology”. The underwater plasma technology is a new technology for the “incineration” of liquid wastes containing hazardous organic components. The decomposition of the organic materials takes place in an electric plasma zone generated in diluted aqueous solutions. The water content of the liquid waste does not need to be evaporated, therefore, the energy consumption of the process is low compared to other combined separation-incineration processes.
  
  During the decomposition of organic materials mostly carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water are formed, while the inorganic salt content of the solution remains unchanged.
  
  The plasma zone is formed on the surface of submerged electrodes, based on the effect of alternating current and sufficient voltage. Because of an alternating current with a frequency of at least 10 Hz, electrochemical reactions can not take place, because of this reason hydrogen and oxygen is not generated. The decomposition of the organic components takes place because of the extremely high temperature and UV radiation of the plasma. This can be further intensified by adding oxidizing agents, preferentially hidrogen-peroxide.
  
  Main advantages:
  
  - The technology can be applied at explosion-prone areas.
  - The inorganic salt content of the solution remains unchanged (other solutions increase the salt content).
  - The technology presents a cheaper solution compared to other separation-incineration solutions in case of a small amount of organic components (incineration is unprofitable), or where environmental aspects do not allow incineration.
  
  Potential users:
  Chemical industry: Cleaning of waste waters of the pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries, e.g. removal of mercaptane or methanol.
  Energetics: Decomposition of iron or radionucleide containing EDTA complexes that are generated in high quantities during the maintenance of nuclear power plants.
  Armaments industry: Elimination of biological and chemical warfare agents, e.g. bacteria and picric acid.
  Medical and sanitary applications: Desinfection of various effluents.
  Petrochemical industry: degradation of organic sulphur included in alkaline wastes, produced by the oil industry.

  The placement of the enormous amount of waste grape marc generated in all over the world is an increasing problem. By processing 100 kilograms of grape-vine approximately 20-25 kilograms of grape marc is produced. From this grape marc high agronomic value compost can be produced by the offered technology.
  
  The offered two-phase composting technology is suitable for composting of fresh grape marc and other subsidiary raw materials. After distillation an environmentally friendly end-product can be produced. The whole composting process is not longer than 70-90 days.
  
  The grape marc and vinasse compost produced by the offered technology is more advantageous than other composts and manures in many respects. Other composts and manure may contaminate the soil by their toxic element content, and may significantly reduce the amount and diversity of N-fixing and other useful bacteria.
  
  The grape marc compost contains high amounts of organic and inorganic colloidal constituents, which means it can be easily used as inocula.
  
  Main advantages:
  
  • Grape marc and vinasse are produced in every wine-producing farm locally, so it is not necessary to transport them to great distances and to pay for take-over.
  • High agricultural value compost can be produced and by returning it to the soil a 20-30% harvest yield can be achieved.
  • Its nutritive substances will be easily absorbed by plants.
  • Unlike manure, grape marc compost only contains a minimum amount of germinative weed-seed.
  • The optimal dosage of 12-15 tons/hectares is significantly lower than the 20-40 tons/hectare in anaerobic digested cattle manure.

  The importance of drinking water is continuously increasing all over the world. This is due to the fact that the world’s population is rapidly growing while the quantity of available water reserves is diminishing. Among the various water-contaminating materials, arsenic is one of the most dangerous components to human health. The arsenic content of waters can increase under natural circumstances as well, however, growth of arsenic content in waters can be also attributed to industrial and agricultural activities. Getting into the human body even a small amount of arsenic causes serious poisoning, or slowly developing illnesses like skin cancer. Because of the above, the arsenic concentration limit of drinking waters is defined more and more strictly. Compared to the former concentration limits of arsenic in drinking waters (50 µg/l then later 30 µg/l, or ppb), the actual level accepted by both the European Union (Directive 98/83/EC 1998) and by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA 2002b) is 10 µg/l. Many drinking water sources cannot meet this strict requirement any more. As a result, arsenic removal technologies get more and more often into the focus of attention.
  
  The technology offer of our client is able to reduce arsenic content in water with more efficiently than any of the other known processes.
  
  Several technologies have been developed for the removal of the arsenic content of drinking waters. One of them is reverse osmosis. According to this technology the water is pressed with high pressure through a semipermeable membrane. Applying reverse osmosis all the contaminants and ions are removed. The disadvantages of reverse osmosis are its high costs and that the cleaned water must be re-salted after cleaning. Inorganic arsenic content of waters can be removed by precipitation and filtering, i.e., adding chemicals an insoluble arsenic salt is precipitated that can be filtered out. Arsenic containing organic compounds cannot be removed this way. Another disadvantage of precipitation is that unless the technological parameters are kept very strictly the efficiency of the removal is low. The most widespread technology for arsenic removal today is based on adsorption. The arsenic content of the water is adsorbed in a packed column, onto the surface of crystalline iron-hydroxide. The drawback of classical adsorption is that small iron oxide and iron-hydroxide particles easily get loose from the surface of the sorbent, hence arsenic re-enters the water and the cleaning efficiency deteriorates.
  
  The G.I.C. Industrial Servicing and Trading Ltd. developed a brand new nanotechnology-based sorbent material for the adsorption of the arsenic content of drinking waters. The invention was jointly patented with the MoD Electronics, Logistics and Property Management Company – MoD. ED Co., (Hungarian patent number P0800248). The research and development work resulted in a sorbent material that has an enormous specific area and hence is able to remove the arsenic content of waters much more efficiently than any of the known technologies today. Do to its unique structure and composition the new sorbent material can remove the organic arsenic content of the waters as well. Arsenic containing adsorbent particles do not re-enter the water. The technology can be implemented easily in both industrial and domestic scales.
  Production technology of the sorbent material is not expensive and consists of just a few chemical and physical steps. The support material of the special nano-scale adsorbent is produced by carbonization of agricultural by-products. According to the experiments, using the new sorbent arsenic content of a water with a 20-30 µg/l initial arsenic content can be reduced down to less than 0.2 µg/l (0.2 ppb), which is around the detection limit of arsenic and is definitely much lower than the strict official 10 µg/l concentration limit. Resulting from the outlined advantages, the new sorbent material is suitable for the dearsenification of drinking waters on both industrial and domestic scales using the flow-through adsorbtion technique.
